We need our Constitution, not a 'new normal'
“Together we will figure out how to build a new normal,” Governor Ralph Northam announced.
| Upon his election in 1932, President Franklin Roosevelt promised the American people a “New Deal” to help navigate the country through the worst economic crisis in American history: The Great Depression. Not only did these programs implemented by Roosevelt prolong the depression, but they also vastly expanded the power and role of the federal government. Americans were left with less freedom, while government garnered more power and control. While the coronavirus continues to shake the nation, state governors in America are beginning to preview what seems to be their own version of a “new deal” for their citizens. During his April 15 press conference, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam talked about the concept of what a “new normal” for the state would look like going forward. “Things are not going back exactly like they were before. Together we will figure out how to build a new normal,” Governor Ralph Northam announced. While Northam did state that this would most likely include guidelines such as “covering your face” and staying “away from large gatherings,” it stills leaves many questions unanswered. Will these “new normal” regulations go beyond the current June 10 stay-at-home order? And more importantly, what does this “new normal” mean for our constitutional rights? If Northam's “new normal” means that I have to surrender my God-given rights to the government, you can count me out. As has been demonstrated numerous times across the country, our fellow citizens are already having their constitutional liberties stripped away right before our eyes. Whether it's a father getting arrested for playing catch with his daughter or local officials telling Americans that their constitutional right to assemble is “non-essential,” we are bearing witness to a grotesque overreach by government not seen in our lifetimes. Last time I checked, I don't ever recall seeing an asterisk next to the Bill of Rights telling us that somehow our rights are null and void during a national crisis. At the end of the day, the American people don't need a “new normal” or a “new deal.” What we need is our Constitution. We the People must demand accountability from our governors and local officials. We aren't mindless sheep to be herded around by the government as our shepherd. Since the days of the American Revolution the American people have risen to the occasion time and again to fight for freedom and liberty. It's time we do it again. Please join me in signing the petition at OpenTheStates.com to let the President, Congress, and governors know you want them to reopen their states and save American livelihoods. # | PETITION_WIDGET{petition_tag:;coalition_id:;anedot_url:} | # |
