Virginia’s servant leader Honored by Mark Meckler
Laurie's persistence and dedication are inspiring our team as it grows into the largest grassroots army in history.
| On December 14, Mark Meckler, President of Convention of States Action, recognized Virginia’s State Communications Coordinator, Laurie Hackett, for her years of outstanding volunteer work, both in Virginia and assisting the national team. Mark noted that “this is to me the most important thing we do, which is to honor people who’ve stepped-up way beyond the call of duty.” He noted that “Laurie’s reputation precedes her all over the country…we talk about her on the leadership calls…because she sets an example—she does whatever it takes.” Most volunteers find their niche and they work diligently at it, which is enormously important. He noted it is uncommon, however, ![]() … to find someone like Laurie, who is willing to do anything and everything, and who you get to watch evolve and lead so naturally and comfortably, and without being asked. That’s real leadership. Leaders are not appointed, leaders just rise up and step into the role. That’s something Laurie has done time and time again. Laurie was presented with the limited edition COS Challenge Coin, which is issued to recognize volunteers who are “continuing the legacy of our Founding Fathers (in the) cause of liberty and self-governance” through extraordinary efforts on behalf of the Convention of States movement. The coin bears a portrait of George Mason, a Virginia delegate to the Constitutional Convention who persuaded fellow Framers that Article V needed an option for an “amendments proposing convention” to ensure the states could protect themselves against a rogue federal government. The coin also bears Mason’s adage: “All power is vested and consequently derived from the people.” Regional Director Monica Sellers recounted her experiences working closely with Laurie on key initiatives. “Laurie is a servant leader,” Monica said, “who looks at where the help is needed and it doesn’t matter if it’s difficult or fun or whatever, she just jumps in and does it.” Mike Ruthenberg, Executive Vice President of Citizens for Self-Governance, noted the profound importance of the statewide SCC position Laurie recently took on. “Your job is the hardest job we have in this organization,” he noted, “because you have to get out our COS message to as many people as possible. Those are the people who will get us to a convention.” Laurie Hackett’s persistence and dedication inspires the Virginia team and all who feel passionately about stopping Washington’s elites from further threatening the nation’s future with unsustainable debts, liberty-quenching and job-stifling regulations, and rank political careerism.
