Update from PA State Grassroots Coordinator - Ruth Hoskins

In 2020 when I was a new District Captain for Convention of States, I had arranged my first meeting for people who had signed the Convention of States petition (www.conventionofstates.com). The meeting was scheduled to be held at the Church on the Mall at Plymouth Meeting Mall in an upstairs meeting room, not too large, I thought. I couldn’t imagine who would come as I called people and invited them to attend from Philadelphia District 200, my district, and one of my roles as a District Captain to outreach in this way.

But that first meeting was washed out by a major storm that headed up the east coast, causing major flooding and closing roads, making it impossible and unsafe for people to come to a meeting at the Church on the Mall. Millions were left without power, and I, who had arranged the meeting at the Church on the Mall, was one of them. I was stranded in the waiting area of the Church on the Mall, still hopeful that people would show up for my first South Eastern Pennsylvania (SE PA) Convention of States meeting. On the other hand, I hoped people would stay home and keep themselves safe. Still, one person showed up for the meeting along with a few stranded motorists whom I made comfortable in the lounge area, inviting them to wait out the storm. I’ll always remember that first person who weathered the storm, and five years later, I am still in contact with him even though he has since moved to Florida.

Undaunted, I arranged a second COS meeting with a good friend from the Philadelphia area who was also just getting started with the Convention of States mission, Mickey McGill. We put out chairs and handouts in an upstairs meeting room, and to our surprise, thirteen people showed up for our first meeting!

Feeling optimistic and successful, which by the way I am more optimistic than ever about Convention of States and an Article V Convention, we moved the following month’s meeting to a larger meeting room and for the following four years held monthly meetings at the Church on the Mall educating people about the mission of Convention of States; term limits, fiscal responsibility and reigning in government overreach and jurisdiction.

I am now the Pennsylvania Grassroots Coordinator, and I am glad I stepped up for this State position a few months ago. I hesitated to do so. As a Regional Captain for SE PA, I love my team and don’t want to leave. But I didn’t have to. I do both positions and bring what I learned in SE PA to the PA state grassroots position. Here’s what I learned.

1-We are a Team. There is no “I” in Team. We work together and we support each other. I love everyone on the team and respect and honor their point of view, although sometimes their points of view are different than my own. I respect and honor their skills-thank-goodness there are many skills and different from my own.

2- I am also beyond thrilled that Convention of States encourages all of us to take the Servant Leadership Course, which reminds us of the importance of service; we are here to serve others, no matter what job we are doing. In my mind, this means God comes first and I try to listen to my intuition and I pray on next steps as I move forward.

3-To this end, SE PA has a prayer group. We pray every Thursday at 10 AM for thirty minutes. Everyone is invited. We all have different beliefs and faiths, but we come together and it increases our faith and gives us the strength and courage to know we are being guided for the highest good and highest mission to save our Republic. The best way to do this is through an Article V Convention, and need I say, with the guidance of God.

Thank you,

In Freedom, love of our country, and in God’s care always,

Ruth Hoskins SGC RC DC COS
