To My Kids, Grandkids, and The Next Generation
| The following letter written by Ohio District Captain Matt Winter was published in the “Dear Next Generation” column of The Epoch Times, April 30 - May 6, 2025 edition. The column serves as an advice column from Epoch Times readers to young people. ***** To My Kids, Grandkids, and The Next Generation, In my advancing years, I feel compelled to memorialize and disseminate a few worldly values, morals, and character traits that I hope you will absorb, assimilate, and exert into your own life adventures. Perhaps each generation can profess that theirs was more difficult, profound, or righteous than the last or next. History is written in many different hues and tones so that is NOT my intent. In fact, I believe that my generation “stands on the shoulders of giants” when it comes to worldly achievements, moral character, and economic advancements. The “Greatest Generation”, my folks and their folks, fought and won two World Wars against incredible odds to save the world from evil intentions. By and large, Americans did that: not to acquire property or gain influence but to recognize their Christian values of natural law, respect for humanity, and freedom. ![]() By comparison, my generation lived a charmed life of privilege because of the bravery and integrity of those before us. We did however, “carry the torch” of hard work, accountability, integrity, responsibility, a strong moral compass of right and wrong, and respect for our fellow man. To be sure, racism, elitism, and protectionism existed in our day but we did “move the ball forward” to improve the opportunity and standard of living for all. The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights enshrined our rights as individuals, our simple freedoms, and our equality of opportunity. It was, and remains today, a unique experiment in citizen governance because they knew the oppression of centralized power. They labored long and hard over the separation of powers and memorialized the inherent freedom necessary to make our own choices and choose our own destiny. You, the next generation must never forget the lessons of our past and engage to retain the reasons for our collective success as a humane culture and dynamic society of free will. You see equality of opportunity was never intended to be equality of outcome. Please do not succumb to the dishonest ambition of those who wish to choose for you. Nobody, Nobody knows what's best for you, better than you! Take that reign that's been given you, learn from the failed experiments of centralized power, avail yourself of the values that your folks bestowed upon you, embody the character of your forefathers, and then exert yourself in life's challenges and many blessings. After the constituion was formally consecrated, Benjamin Franklin was asked what type of government we actually attained. He said, “…that we've formed a republic, if we can keep it.” And Abraham Lincoln said it best, “We are just one generation from losing it.” Get engaged.
