Timeout with COS Moms - Preserving the Constitution
Moms, spend time this school year preserving the Constitution with your children.
| Hi moms! Convention of States Michigan is here for you! Timeout with COS Moms! Grab your tea, coffee, or cocktail! It’s time for your timeout! We spent the summer studying founding and framing documents in our American history. As America celebrates its 249th birthday this year, we have taken time to reflect on the documents that helped shape our founding. We end September with a reflection on the culminating record - our seminal instrument to American exceptionalism – our United States Federal Constitution. We the People, it begins. It continues with seven Articles. It ends with 27 Amendments, including the Bill of Rights. It totals only four pages in its original text. And it is the cornerstone of American republicanism, states’ rights, the protection of negative liberty, and the preservation of a balanced and checked government. Whether the government is still balanced today is a separate argument. Whether the government keeps itself in check is a separate argument. An Article V convention of the states would realign any of those imbalances back to the original intent of the Constitution. But first, Moms, we must know its meaning and context. We cannot hope to “fix” any problems with our federal government until we understand what our Constitution says and means. Moms - if we want to preserve our beloved Constitution for our children, it is our responsibility to delve into the document, know it for ourselves, and teach it to our children. Preservation takes time, it takes heat, and it takes practice. Done improperly, canning leaves the jar unsealed, where mold and bacteria can set in. This leads to a breakdown of the food it is intended to preserve. Practiced correctly, canning can preserve food for decades. Start preserving the Constitution with your children. Make this the school year to practice with it, to put it through the fires of your study and attention. Seal it in your minds and hearts. Utilize the Interactive Constitution tool at the National Constitution Center to launch your Constitutional investigation. Watch the story of the U.S. Constitution here. Take the free Constitution 101 course from Hillsdale College. Start here. September 17 is Constitution Day. The season of autumn is one of harvest and preservation. Preserve our American history and heritage with your children! Join our Convention of States Michigan volunteer team for more great resources and civic aspiration! Start by signing the petition here. Convention of States also offers exceptional free educational resources for adults. Check it out here. Now you know, moms. Make sure your kids know too! |
