WISDOM, TRANSFORMATION, INTROSPECTION

The Year of the Snake in Chinese culture symbolizes wisdom, transformation, and introspection. People born in the Year of the Snake are believed to be intuitive, strategic, and intelligent.  If you were born in 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, or 2013, then you are a Snake; at least according to the Chinese zodiac.

Wisdom, transformation, and introspection. I find these three traits so appropriate as we go through a major political leadership change, all starting with the issuance of an abundance of Executive Orders (EO) from the Oval Office. A bit of EO history seems to be in order here. According to The National Constitution Center, an executive order is a directive from the President that has much of the same power as a federal law.

The constitutional basis for the executive order is the President’s broad power to issue executive directives. . .. Article II of the U.S. Constitution vests executive powers in the President, makes him the Commander in Chief, and requires that the President “shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” Laws can also give additional powers to the President.

While an executive order can have the same effect as a federal law under certain circumstances, Congress can pass a new law to override an executive order, subject to a presidential veto. And EOs can be ‘revoked’ by the next administration. They are not permanent. (Source: https://constitutioncenter.org/blog/executive-orders-101-what-are-they-and-how-do-presidents-use-them)

From my desk, I see many positive transformational changes addressed in the EOs coming at this administration’s start up. To me the challenge is not in the issuance, rather the challenge is in congressional Republicans, Democrats and Independents using their wisdom and introspection to enact them into law.

Enter the Convention of States (COS) push toward an Article V Convention. While term limits are not yet on this President’s agenda, it is our priority, and we need to keep focused on that goal.

COSLA started off the year (of the snake) in a great way at the Louisiana Boat, RV, and Sport Shows, one in Lake Charles, and one in Houma.  Nearly 400 people signed our petition telling our state legislators that we want Louisiana to be a part of the Article V convention when it is called. Eighty of these petition signers indicated that they wanted to be more involved with Convention of States.

Many thanks to Events Coordinator,Thom Hager, at the Lake Charles event, District Captain, Kirk Menard, at the Houma event, and their team of dedicated volunteers who worked so hard to spread the word about Convention of States and our Article V project.

May wisdom and introspection keep us here in Louisiana focused and ‘on point’ toward this all-important goal. As the saying goes, “Time is of the essence.” Let’s keep making the push toward the reality of an Article V Convention.

You, too, can sign the Convention of States Action petition at conventionofstates.com.  Click the “Take Action” button on the homepage for a description of our volunteer teams and leadership positions and join our Convention of States Louisiana team.
