The Presidential King: But Who Manages the King?

We have a de-facto presidential king because Congress is failing to do its job.

We all have a boss. Most of us have multiple bosses. Those bosses also have bosses. It is unique in the annals of history that those being bossed become the rulers of the bosses. So it happened when the Declaration of Independence was penned. A new idea of government was created whereby those that were ruled had the ultimate say on how they would be ruled.

In the Constitution even this ideal was restrained by the idea of an electoral college that protected us from a tyranny of the majority. The Constitution set up three branches of government such that each branch was a check against the other two. No single branch of government was to be the ruling branch. The idea was that they all had to work together for the common good of the nation and the people.

So, how did we get into the predicament whereby the President became the primary pusher of domestic policy?

It all came about because one of the branches failed to do its job. Once Congress realized that being a Senator or Representative could be a really good lifetime career, they set about creating a set of conditions to make it so. Thus, the career politician was born.

The career politician’s goal shifted from being a representative of the people to being perpetually re-elected. Their emphasis shifted from doing the nation’s business to raising money and elevating themselves in the eyes of the electorate so they could be re-elected.

Several Presidents got tired of a do-nothing Congress, so they started subverting Congress by issuing Presidential Directives. Whether these Presidential Directives were constitutional made no difference, because Congress did not push back.

Because Congress did not push back, the President has become a de facto monarch.

Because we now have a de facto king, the question now has to be asked – Who rules the King? Because everyone has a boss, are we now subject to the whim and fancy of a small group of oligarchs who are intent on power and money?

People get fed up with the machinations of politics. Because they are frustrated and see no beneficial interest to themselves, most people eschew getting involved in politics. This lack of interest by the American public has led us into this current mess. There will always be conflict because people create conflict by their nature. Under a system of popular government there will always be those who will seek for political preferment by clamoring for reform. When one group becomes dominant over all the others, then they get to elect their “king.” It falls on the American people to maintain the balance of power such that one group does not become dominant.

If there is a group that wins, then the rest of us lose. We can all be winners if we get back to what our Founding Fathers envisioned during the creation of our nation. Does that mean we win all the time? No, but it means that in a general sense our nation wins by protecting the God-given rights of life with freedom to become what we want to be, the protection of property rights, and freedom to pursue happiness subject to not trampling on the rights of others.

We now face a choice – do we want to subject ourselves to the edicts of a presidential king and his cronies or do we want to be free to make our own choices? A Convention of States offers us a chance to tip the balance in favor of living our lives with Liberty and Equality of Opportunity as it was intended to be. It is our choice.

What choice do you make?
