The Power of We
It's up to all of us to keep the republic.
| Most everyone has heard the story of Benjamin Franklin answering a Philadelphia woman's question about what the Founding Fathers cooked up in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787 by saying “A republic, if you can keep it.” While it's true that the vigilance required to keep a republic is indeed an individual commitment, Franklin and the Founders – as expressed in the timeless phrase “We the People” that begins the Constitution's preamble – vested the power and thereby the responsibility in keeping the republic to American citizens as a whole. The Founders delivered the power and responsibility to us, but they did not leave us empty-handed. In Article V, they gave us – through our state legislatures – the power to advance a conversation about how to best rein in the federal government. Article V is the definition of republican government – federalism in action. As history has shown, organized, dedicated, and committed grassroots movements can change the course of American politics and American history. Last month, we commemorated the anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution. There is perhaps no finer example of a long and sustained grassroots effort to rally public opinion and move both federal and state representatives to act. It's a case study in steadfast perseverance. Likewise, the movement to call a limited-purpose Article V convention to debate and propose amendments that will curb the power of the federal government requires a long and sustained grassroots effort. That effort is yielding results. Not only have 19 of the required 34 states necessary to compel Congress to call an Article V convention passed such a resolution to do so, but due to the work of tens of thousands of grassroots activists, we have this year alone piled up significant legislative victories, are approaching 3 million petition signers, and continue to establish positive relationships with state legislators. This month we will feature several articles that detail what ties this particular grassroots movement together, look at the truly significant amount of legislative progress that been made this year, and celebrate the roots of Article V and self-governance during Constitution week. Unlike what you will hear from opponents of our quest, utilizing the Constitution to preserve limited government is under no circumstances reckless or risky. It is our duty – a duty given to us by the men who founded the United States of America. Such an effort – much like the grassroots movement to secure the right of women to vote – will not be an overnight sensation, or burst forth even in an instant. To paraphrase the Greek saying that described the wheels of justice, grassroots movements such as ours may grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine. Such grinding requires the work and dedication of you and millions of others like you, who believe in the design, necessity, and process of Article V. So if you haven't yet affixed your signature to the COS petition and joined the movement that will change the course of our politics, sign the petition below and plug into the Power of We today in order to keep the republic. # | PETITION_WIDGET{petition_tag:;coalition_id:;anedot_url:} | # |
