The Lone Star State crushes it

I have an abiding confidence in the spirit of America.

As recently documented in “The Story Of” docuseries, Texas passed the COS resolution in 2017. Unfortunately, that version of the bill contained a sunset clause, which will expire later this year.

That’s the bad news.

But here’s the good news: if the COS grassroots in Texas have anything to say about it, that won’t be an issue for much longer.

On Wednesday, the Texas House Committee on State Affairs heard public testimony on House Joint Resolution (HJR) 98 — a new application that removes the sunset clause — with strong backing from a group of COS supporters.

Texas representative Cody Vasut, the Texas Public Policy Foundation, Convention of States President Mark Meckler, and other members of the grassroots team eloquently squared off against Common Cause, the John Birch Society, and Eagle Forum, who opposed the resolution, citing fears about a runaway convention.

“I have an abiding confidence in the spirit of America and the ability of its people to govern themselves,” countered Rep. Vasut, who recently appeared on COS at Home. “That’s what the Constitution enshrines — of the people, by the people, for the people.”

The committee ultimately adjourned without voting on the measure, which the team will continue to push for in the state.

“Our anticipation is that within the next couple of weeks, when they have their committee hearings again, they’ll vote on HJR 98, and we believe that they are going to pass the resolution,” Regional Director Jonathan Viaud explained.

“We have a team of Texans who show up at the capitol every single week,” he continued. “It’s because of these heroes that we’re going to be successful. … They absolutely are going to make sure we save this country.”

Watch the full hearing below and stay tuned to the Convention of States blog for future updates about HJR 98.
