Support National History Day
| The motto of National History Day is: Studying the past to inform the present and shape the future. NHD is an independent organization over 50 years old which encourages students in grades 6-12 (public, private, and homeschool) to conduct authentic research and present our history in engaging ways. Their mission is that “through the process, students develop skills in communication, project management, and historical thinking.” The theme for this year's competition is Revolution, Reaction, Reform, which ties in very well with the nation's semiquincentennial (250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence). ![]() Authentic research means not just reading books about history or visiting with historians (although those are valuable), but critically examining primary source documents and conducting interviews with those who have experienced the topic. Students may then present the information gleaned in one of several formats depending on skill and interest. Except for paper (individual only) students may compete in the other categories either individually or in a group. * Paper * Performance (drama) * Documentary (video) * Exhibit * Website The judging on each category involves examination of the student's annotated bibliography and interview of the student(s) to question in depth their knowledge and research. After competing at a regional level, the highest-ranking students may progress to state and national levels of competitions. North Carolina has an active NHD organization. You may locate which schools in your region participate by visiting the NC-NHD site. Regional competitions will be held from late February to early April. Students, though, will begin researching as soon as school begins. As patriots, we may encourage and assist teachers and students with National History Day. Many judges are needed at regional contests, but many schools have rehearsal judging in advance, providing students time to hone their presentations and communication skills. Contact your school's or homeschool coop's history teachers to volunteer for judging. Volunteer to judge at your regional level. You are certain to be impressed at the level of historical understanding (including analysis, cause and effect, significance…) and creativity in presentation. ![]() Suzanne McPherson, Volunteer Activist Former NHD coach and judge |
