Sending Letters to Legislators

District Captain Lexie Lockrow, along with husband Gene, recently hosted a group of volunteers in their Olathe home to write letters to legislators around the state. They wrote more than fifty letters to legislators who have yet to indicate their support for SCR1604. Already passed by the Kansas Senate, the resolution passing in the Kansas House will be the last legislative hurdle to Kansas joining the current 19 states applying to have a convention for proposing amendments.

Lexie's meeting went so well we had a second meeting in Johnson County with ten volunteers writing letters. Who's next?

Current events in Washington are evidence that our government is incapable of fixing itself. The founders knew the states would need to bypass the national government in order to institute necessary reforms. Ten years ago economists were alarmed that the annual interest payments on our national debt would be greater than our spending on national defense. We are now beyond that. What are our state legislators waiting for? What are you waiting for?

Hand-written letters are all but guaranteed to be read and in many cases answered when received by a legislator.

Sample Letter

Dear Representative ______,

Almost everyone knows our federal government is on a dangerous course.  The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster. [Use your own concern in your own words.]

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to make changes to the federal structure when Washington, D.C., starts to abuse its authority.

Article V of the Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention for the limited purpose of proposing amendments to the Constitution.

Convention of States Action was launched in 2013 to call a convention for the purpose of proposing amendments that impose 1) fiscal restraints on the federal government, 2) limitations on the scope and jurisdiction of the federal government, and 3) term limits on federal officials.

I support this approach.  I want Kansas to be one of the necessary 34 states that passes a resolution calling for a Convention of the States.

The Kansas Senate passed such a resolution earlier this year.  SCR1604 was passed on a vote of 29-11.  This same resolution also passed through the House Committee on Federal and State Affairs.  It is ready to be taken up for floor action in the House at the proper time in 2026.

I ask you to read and support the Convention of States resolution, SCR1604.  It’s available on the legislature’s website.  For more information about Convention of States, visit their website at conventionofstates.com.

Thanks so much for your service to the people of your district and to all Kansans.

Sincerely,

______________
