Senator says rights come from government, not God

Tim Kaine vs. Imam Jefferson.


In a recent shocking committee hearing, Senator Tim Kaine openly attacked America’s founding creed, revealing either open contempt for the Declaration of Independence or shocking ignorance about our government. 

Or both.

Moreover, he said the quiet part out loud: politicians like him want you to look to the government, not “nature’s God,” for your rights. 

Since the dawn of the Republic, American politics has always been anchored and guided by this simple, nonnegotiable truth: if the government gives you your rights, it can also take them away. Rights precede government; they are intrinsic, “unalienable.” In the famous words of the Declaration, “Governments are instituted among Men” to “secure” that which already belongs to us.

But not in Kaine’s America.

The senator from Virginia apparently believes that the Beneficent Ruling Class in Washington looked down on us — lowly, poor scum of the earth — and charitably agreed to bless us with a few government-approved “rights.” (In that case, we must try very hard not to offend them lest they change their minds and revoke our liberties. And, of course, what’s more offensive to such benevolent politicians than to claim that our rights actually came from the Flying Spaghetti Monster?)

Simply reciting the American creed — that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness — is tantamount to espousing radical Iranian dogma, Kaine said on Wednesday: “The notion that rights don’t come from laws and don’t come from the government, but come from the Creator — that’s what the Iranian government believes. It’s a theocratic regime that bases its rule on Sharia law and targets … religious minorities.”

And in case he wasn’t clear enough the first time, he doubled down: “The statement that rights do not come from our laws or our governments is extremely troubling.”

If the senator has a problem with that phrase, he should take it up with an earlier (and worthier) Virginian. After his recent remarks, though, serious questions exist as to whether Kaine has ever even heard of Imam Thomas Jefferson. If not, he may want to acquaint himself; the author of the Declaration of Independence is somewhat important.

That’s what makes this spectacle all the more embarrassing. It’s not just that a sitting senator openly snubbed America’s founding creed; it’s that he appears entirely ignorant of that creed. The “Beneficent Ruling Class,” which apparently thinks it can control our lives, seems to know less about the American proclivity for self-governance than King George did. 

Few speak as candidly (or stupidly) as Sen. Kaine. But you better believe he’s not the only one with a god complex. They want your rights to be dependent on the government (a.k.a., them), and they really don’t care what the Founders, Declaration, or Constitution have to say about it.    

That’s why we must send them a message, reminding them of the true Author of our rights.

Article V of the Constitution enables the states to call a convention to propose amendments that would put power-hungry politicians back in their places. If you, unlike Tim Kaine, happen to believe that all men are endowed by their Creator, not the government, with certain unalienable Rights, sign the petition below for an Article V convention.
