Rep. Meerman Motivates MI Grassroots

Michigan State Representative Luke Meerman, District 89, addressed volunteers for Convention of States (COS) following their Lobby Day on Tuesday, May 20, at the State Capitol in Lansing. Meerman encouraged the volunteers to persist, pray, and sacrifice to prepare the Michigan State Legislature for the first-ever Article V Convention of States.

Meerman spoke of the sacrifices of so many people who gave their lives fighting tyranny. Those sacrifices must be honored, he said. People can do this by being actively engaged in the defense of liberty.

“I am committed to restoring federalism in our government, especially to restrain federal spending, and return power to the states,” Meerman said. “I believe this is a dream worth having, even if the outcome is uncertain,” he continued.

Article V of the Constitution provides two modes for amendments to be proposed: through Congress and/or by the States at a convention of the states. Grassroots supporters of the Convention of States nationwide are working to secure agreement from 34 states that the federal government must be restrained in the areas of spending, terms of office, and bureaucratic regulations.

COS MI State Director Sarah Santana and a volunteer group organize in-person visits to the Capitol each month. Those who participated last week received gracious welcomes from legislators and staff members throughout Capitol offices.

Michigan patriots are invited to take part by exploring the many VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES with Convention of States.
