Recognizing Constitution Day in the Schools

All educational institutions receiving federal funds are required to observe Constitution Day (September 17), but instead of a requirement, we should view this as an opportunity to celebrate an amazing document that has influenced many other countries.

School principals are now back at work. Right now is the time to contact them and volunteer to help students learn about the US Constitution.

We can assist in the schools (public, private, or homeschool coop) by volunteering to conduct a read-aloud in the 3rd-6th grade classrooms the week of September 15-19. There is a number of books available for children on the US Constitution, and each has benefits and gaps. The book I prefer to use is We the People: The Story of Our Constitution by Lynn Cheney.

The read-aloud will take about 30 minutes. A read-aloud is better if you stop to clarify or discuss to ensure understanding and to keep students engaged. Attached is a guide so that you will feel capable of conducting a read-aloud even if you have never done so before. We the People Guide

Here are additional suggestions to make this even successful:

* Read the book several times in advance to be prepared. Reading it aloud to yourself is better than silent reading to practice pacing and emphasis of certain phrases or words.
* Mark in the book with a small dot where you want to pause to explain or ask thinking questions.
* When reading, be sure to hold the book to your side, facing out so that students may see the illustrations. Not only do the lovely illustrations in this book keep attention, but they also aid in understanding the text.

If you have funds available, consider donating a copy of the book to the classrooms in which you read or to the school library.
