THE PRESIDENT IS TALKING ABOUT CONVENTION OF STATES

September 22, 2025 – on his Truth Social account, President Donald Trump posted a comprehensive article from the Just the News website that documents the significant progress being made by Convention of States (COS) throughout the nation.

Entitled "Convention of States effort surges as Trump aims at shrinking size, scope of federal government", the piece was authored by Amanda Head and published on September 21. It discusses the process of calling a limited-purpose Article V convention, a convention’s potential to impact the national debt and impose term limits on federal officials, and President Donald Trump's mandate to curb the power of the federal government.

As Just the News reported, presidents such as Washington, Lincoln, and Reagan have supported the convention mechanism outlined in Article V of the Constitution, but “no president has thrown his imprimatur behind the effort. Trump could change that.”

Convention of States President Mark Meckler is quoted as saying “There’s nobody more important and more appropriate to help lead the charge than President Trump.”

Meckler is quoted extensively, including the following observation about the importance of the movement and the moment:

“I think the future of the country is at stake. I don't think that's an overstatement. Elections are always critically important, and every election is the most important election of our lifetime. There's also a fundamental structural reform that has to take place at the level of the federal government that will never be done in Washington, DC.”

The Trump administration is composed of several COS endorsers and supporters, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Nearly 3 million Americans have signed the COS petition to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress. Of the 2.7 million petitions collected nationally, California boasts nearly 160,000 signers, making it one of the most vocal states calling for an amending convention.

Convention of States Action is a 501©(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to reestablishing a culture of self-governance in America and limiting federal overreach. We boast a grassroots network comprising millions of dedicated supporters and volunteers in every legislative district across the nation. Currently, 19 out of the constitutionally mandated 34 states have successfully passed the Convention of States Resolution. California is not currently one of the 19 states to formally request a convention for proposing amendments; however, it is an epicenter of political thought and should therefore be considered a leader in the movement to restore self-governance.
