Meet Your District 31 Captain - Derek Besler
Here is a short Q&A to get some insight to better know your local DC, Derek Besler.
| The Convention of States movement is built on the backs of our volunteers. This grassroots army is truly made up of average citizens just like you who have decided to step up and get involved. One of the key roles in our organization is our District Captains (DC). These men and woman are the ones who are active in their communities in spreading the word about the COS solution and helping get others involved. Here is a short Q&A to get some insight to better know your local DC, Derek Besler. Q: How long have you been involved with COS? A: I have been going to town halls and meetings for a year but volunteered as a DC about four months ago. Q: What was the big item/thing that drew you into becoming a volunteer/leader? A: Being able to actually doing something to save the country. Q: What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned in regard to COS or the U.S. Constitution? A: How the Constitution has been changed by the Supreme Court over and over again. Q: How active were you in politics/government before COS? A: I wasn't active at all really, read and talked with friends by never made a move. Q: What is it like being a district captain? A: It is awesome! Being able to learn and talk to people and educate them on Article V has been great and even discussing subjects on the local level. Q: Which of the three pillars of COS do you feel is most important? A: Limiting the overreach of government. Q: Why do you believe in the COS movement? A: Because it is simple, it is legal and all we have to do is educate the public and through their strength, we can show our state legislatures we want this. Q: What has been your most rewarding aspect of being involved with COS so far? A: There are two things: first, teaching people about our Constitution and second, getting to do this with my dad, another volunteer. Q: What is the support for COS like in your district? A: It is starting to grow now that there is a DC who is getting the word out and more people getting involved. Q: What would you say to someone who is on the fence regarding Article V COS? A: I would ask them, “what is holding you back from supporting Article V?” Then, I would try and clarify any misinformation to get them on board. Q: How can people in your area get involved? A: Get out and talk to people, come to one of our town halls and when you're ready, you can start working events. Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being part of the COS team? A: It truly feels like we are making a difference! Plus, it's reward to meet like-minded people. Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add? A: I am so grateful to have Harvey and Velva Fitzgerald as mentors as well as the rest of the West River group. I am making it a challenge to myself to change the legislatures to a “yeah” for those who are currently opposed to the Article V resolution. |
