Meet Me at the (Iowa State) Fair
Have you ever wanted to try a chicken pickle ranch rocket? This is your chance!
| For political junkies, the Iowa State Fair serves up a smorgasbord of juicy pageantry, like Vivek Ramasway rapping along to an Eminem song and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz chowing down on a pork chop. For COS junkies, it’s a hotbed of new petition signers. While most attendees arrive hoping to try some decadent, deep-fried, definitely-not-MAHA-approved foods (don’t worry — we won’t tell), like this year’s tangy cherry soda glaze smoked ham balls or the “Iowa Twinkie” (a smoked jalapeno stuffed with cream cheese, sweet corn, pulled pork, and gree onions, wrapped in bacon, and drizzled with barbecue sauce and ranch dressing), COS activists have a very different goal in mind: collecting more petitions than calories. The Iowa State Fair currently holds the top four spots for most petitions signed, with 6,302, 4,206, 3,949, and 2,686 signatures over various years. This year, the state team is hoping to claim the number-five spot as well. Another 3,000 petitions or so will bring the total number of Iowans who have signed the COS petition to over 60,000! “The Convention of States message was one of hope for the future of America, and it resonated with Iowans loud and clear,” said Iowa State Director Karen Schuster after last year’s tremendous success. “Iowans are beyond frustrated with the unchecked power and overreach of the federal government. Educating fair attendees about the mission of Convention of States to restore self-governance proved to be the inspiring message Iowans needed to hear.” This year, Schuster’s team will be joined by the boundless Andrew “Block Walk” Barkman and COS Vice President Mike Ruthenberg. The event kicked off on Thursday and will continue through August 17. Guests can find the COS booth in the air-conditioned Varied Industries building.
