Lessons from ancient Rome

Clearly, republican Rome is our parallel. We have corruption, reckless spending, and a failing media.

Our much and unjustly maligned Founders looked to republican Rome for inspiration. Alexander Hamilton said of republican Rome that it was “the utmost height of human greatness.” But the last of the republican Rome’s generation worried about the corrupt effect money had in politics and the almost complete indifference to it.

Our republic is considered among the most corrupt by Bill O’Reilly. There is virtually total influence over legislation, especially from lobbyists. Politics has only changed in the form of corruption. Republican Rome’s politicians were “wined and dined,” as are our representatives. Pompey recognized their flaw and proposed increasing the penalty for “buying elections” and the “statute of limitations.”

Clearly, republican Rome is our parallel. We have corruption, reckless spending, and the media failing to inform us of who Congress is speaking with and for what reasons. These are the elements that bring about the demise of a free people and the seizure of power by tyrants.

Moreover, notwithstanding who is in power, our debt is in the trillions. This reckless spending will require several terms of Congress to yield balanced budgets and behavior toward rational governance. However, to bring about this rationality requires an informed and active body politic. Republican Roman citizens were detached from their representatives. Too many Americans are also in that mold.

Now is the time to join our grassroots organization as we seek to educate our state legislators and the public about Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Education and a return to self-governance is the only solution to stop the downfall of America. We cannot afford to be indifferent. The time to act is now.
