| ===== Do You Have Your Elevator Speech? ===== As we head into petition-gathering season, remember: most people you meet won’t be familiar with Article V of the Constitution or the idea of a convention for proposing amendments. That’s okay. Our job is to spark interest, earn a few seconds of attention, and deliver a message that’s clear, concise, and persuasive. Step 1: Start with a Question That Stops Them in Their Tracks Before you say anything else, you need them to stop. Ask a simple, powerful question—something that speaks to a frustration they likely already feel: * “Do you want to see an end to lifetime politicians in Washington?” * “Should we have term limits for Congress?” * “Want to help rein in the power of the federal government?” These kinds of questions resonate. They make people stop, nod, and walk over. Step 2: Deliver the Elevator Speech (30 Seconds or Less) Once they’re listening—whether they’re eager or skeptical—here’s what to say: “Our Founders gave us a way to bypass Congress and propose constitutional amendments through Article V of the U S Constitution. If two-thirds of the state legislatures agree, we can call a convention to propose amendments—like term limits for Congress, limits on federal power, and a requirement for fiscal responsibility. The amendments still have to be approved by three-fourths of the states. This petition asks your Kansas legislators to support that process. We have already passed in the Senate, all we need is the House.” For eager supporters, that may be all it takes—they’ll grab a clipboard and sign. For skeptics, you’ve planted the seed. From there, be ready to answer a few questions, hand them a card, or if they believe they know more than you throw their objections back at them. Don't argue, just ask them to explain their objection. For instance, “What about a runaway convention? - Response: “How would that happen?” Or, “We don't follow the Constitution now.” Response: “Can you name one amendment we don't follow?” The Apostle Paul told his friend Timothy to be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction. This is our season. If you want more information about answering objections or Article V I encourage you to visit COSUnversity.com. Take the introductory courses, COS100, COS200, GOV100 and VOL100.
