IN GOD WE TRUST - OUR NATIONAL MOTTO

====== I DIDN’T KNOW THAT!! ======

I recently found out that the United States has a national motto. That motto, “In God We Trust,” was adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1956, replacing E pluribus unum (“Out of many, one”), which had been the de facto motto since the initial design of the Great Seal of the United States. content.conventionofstates.com_cosaction-prod_public_content_images_101540_101540_original.jpgThe phrase originated during the Civil War to reinforce faith and morale and first appeared on coins in 1864, becoming more widely accepted by the 1950s. The earliest English usage dates back to 1748, noted in Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania militia. In 1785, Joel Barlow revised Isaac Watts’ Psalter for American audiences, translating Psalm 115:9–11 as “In God we Trust.”

The motto has faced controversy, with some objecting that it violates the First Amendment. Lawsuits have challenged its use on currency and public property, but courts, including several federal circuits—have consistently upheld its constitutionality. The Supreme Court has addressed the motto indirectly but never issued a definitive ruling.

So, What’s My Point with this information: Louisiana's Act 264, effective August 1, 2023, requires public schools, charter schools, and public postsecondary campuses to display the national motto in every building and classroom by August 1, 2026. Every public-school classroom in LA should have In God We Trust posted by now.

For America’s 250th Anniversary, COSLA hopes to ask parish and community governments to display the national motto in their facilities. I invite you to be part of this initiative to encourage broader public display of the motto in government facilities. Let us spread the word about our country’s motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

===== ALLONS!! =====
