How DOGE is boosting military readiness
Ronald Reagan paved the way.
| Fiscal conservatives have often made exceptions to tight-fisted spending for military expenditures. President Ronald Reagan, for example, boosted national defense spending from roughly $140 billion in 1980 to nearly $300 billion by the end of his presidency. In 1983, the Gipper delivered an address to the American people calling for an increased military budget. “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace,” Reagan quoted from George Washington’s first annual address to both houses of Congress. Even so, he kept an eye out for opportunities to save. “I want you to know that members of my administration and I have agonized over the current defense budget,” he claimed. “We’ve trimmed back our plans for rebuilding defense by more than half, we’ve hunted for savings and nonessential programs, we’ve weighed economic risks and economic benefits. The defense budget we finally presented is a minimal budget to protect our country’s vital interests and meet our commitments.” The 40th president proved it was possible to invest heavily in national defense while still seeking ways to eliminate waste. Forty years later, the Department of Defense (DOD) has taken that lesson to heart, with ongoing efforts, in partnership with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to cut costs and increase military readiness. Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Secretary Troy Meink revealed the Air Force had saved over $10 billion by “cutting waste and working with vendors to reduce contract spending.” According to the department’s 2026 budget, at least $355 million of those savings came from canceled climate and DEI initiatives. > Proud to announce with @SecAFOfficial 10 billion dollars worth of savings @DOGE pic.twitter.com/wOM6743zzq > — Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (@SecDef) July 16, 2025 Additionally, Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell reported that, under Hegseth, the DOD has saved another $10 billion. “All of this money will be reinvested in readiness, capability, training, and the troops,” Parnell explained. Other branches, including the Navy, Coast Guard, and Army, have proudly followed suit. Hegseth, a COS endorser, has expressed vocal opposition to DEI, which he announced in a recent Senate hearing “is dead” at the DOD. Instead, he has said our military should focus on achieving peace through strength and restoring a warrior ethos. While billion-dollar cuts may sound like a drop in the bucket compared to a $37 trillion national debt, they help ensure taxpayer money is well spent to support our troops and protect American interests. Ronald Reagan would be proud.
