Happy 85th to Nancy Pelosi!

Surprise – it's term limits!

Today, March 26, is former Speaker of the House and current member of the House Nancy Pelosi's 85th birthday.

To quote Kool & the Gang vocalist James Warren Taylor, “let's all celebrate and have a good time!”

Turning 85 in relatively good health is quite an accomplishment – as is being in Congress for 37 years and counting and being the first and only female Speaker of the House. How do you think she will celebrate the big 8-5?

No longer being Speaker, she can't commandeer a U.S. military jet to fly her and her fat staff from D.C. back home to San Francisco as she tried to do in 2007. That's a shame.

We know that Nancy likes ice cream. Who can forget during the madness of Covid lockdowns and scarcity when she happily showed late night host James Corden packs and packs of assorted ice cream flavors that were chilling in two Sub-Zero freezers that go for five figures?

So there will be plenty of ice cream for the party – and of course it was her husband, Paul Pelosi, who made all of the money to afford such luxuries; how dare you even wonder if there was ever any insider trading or curious legislative exceptions involved in amassing the Pelosi fortune!

No need for too many party decorations or favors – shredded copies of the State of the Union addresses of Donald Trump make for great streamers and gift bag tissue!

As for gifts, what to give the woman who seemingly has everything?

Perhaps we could get her a big ole fence. As you may recall, it was Nancy Pelosi who built a fence to keep American citizens out of their Capitol

In the wake of January 6, 2021, Pelosi used her authority to seize the opportunity to prevent American citizens from accessing our Capitol by ordering the construction of non-scalable fencing around the entire Capitol grounds.

That fencing remained long after any threat to the Capitol – real or perceived – had ceased. Washington, D.C., delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland were so incensed by the abuse of power that they introduced a bill entitled "No Fencing at the Capitol"

Yet fencing seems impractical as a birthday present. There is a better gift that we can give – calling a limited-purpose Article V convention that would discuss and propose fixed term limits for federal officials and members of Congress.

That way, people like Nancy Pelosi, whose time in Washington, D.C., leads to a feeling of powerful indispensability, can truly enjoy their families, take up a hobby, volunteer, or do any number of things that don't involve the ceaseless accumulation of power and privilege that is unbecoming of a representative republic.

Let's give “Speaker Emerita” Pelosi and the likes of longtime colleagues such as Mitch McConnell, Dick Durbin, and the Chucks (Schumer and Grassley) a gift they will never forget. Let's work to get term limits in place, and give career politicians something else to do.

Happy Birthday, Nancy Pelosi!
