Erik Hoghaug MT Testimony: We Must Act

Attachment: 4656/Erik_Hoghaug_MT_Testimony_-_We_Must_Act.docx

We Must Act

Mr. Chairman and Committee Members

My name is Erik Hoghaug, COS volunteer from HD60

The United States debt has grown from $908 billion in 1980 to over $36 trillion today. Federal regulations continue to grow and their intrusion in peoples’ daily lives is unprecedented. Show me in the US Constitution where we the people gave the federal government the power to regulate how much water our washing machine uses?

Ronald Reagan said – “Either you will control your government, or government will control you.” His words were wise but our founders were wiser. For they knew the federal government would grow even with the limits placed on it by the Constitution. It is for this reason, Article V has two ways to amend the Constitution. They knew that “when” not “if” the federal government grew too large, there was a way to amend. This power was left to “the people”, this power was left to you. How humbling is it to think that our founders thought of you when writing the Constitution. This mighty and moral power was left to ranchers, left to farmers, left to teachers, left to you, citizens of this great country. The federal government does not derive its power from itself, the power of the federal government is given to it by “we the people”.

We all have fire extinguishers in our homes. They are there for that emergency that we hope and pray does not visit our homes. The extinguisher is there even though there are firemen just down the road or many miles down the road. Many might say, don’t attempt to put out the fire yourself — it may be dangerous — you don’t know what could happen — wait for the professionals to come. Well my fellow citizens of America, our house is on fire — the firemen are not coming to help. It’s time to pull out the fire extinguisher and fight this fire – it is time to act. If we continue to wait on the professionals, our house, our country will be gone.
