Congress wastes billions of taxpayer dollars every year. It's time to shrink their budget.
| Calls to “defund the police” are growing louder by the minute, but we have a better idea: defund Congress. Unlike the police, Congress uses taxpayer dollars to fund projects far outside their constitutional jurisdiction. Here are some examples of government expenditures authorized by Congress in a single year. They represent only a fraction of the waste that occurs each year in our nation’s capital: * $4.6 million on lobster tail * $2.1 million on games, toys, and wheeled goods * $1.7 million on pianos, tubas, and trombones * $2.6 million on a weight-loss program for truck drivers * $3 million on EPA contractors who have done no work * $1.5 studying sleep habits at Mexico border Enough is enough: it’s time to defund Congress – and our Founders gave us a way in Article V of the Constitution. Article V allows the people – acting through the states – to call a Convention of States for proposing constitutional amendments. These amendments can effectively defund Congress by mandating a balanced budget (without raising taxes) and limiting the types of things on which Congress can spend money. Here's how it works. It takes 34 states to call a Convention of States. States “call” for this convention by passing a resolution instructing Congress to set a time and place for the convention. Once 34 states pass these resolutions, the states meet to discuss and vote on amendment proposals. Each state gets one vote, and it takes a majority of states to pass any amendment proposal. But the process isn't finished once the convention passes its amendments. As per Article V, those proposals are sent back to the states for ratification. Thirty-eight states must ratify any amendment proposal for it to be adopted in the Constitution. The process is safe, legal, and – best of all – effective. Using the Convention of States process, the states can defund Congress by limiting its budget, capping taxation, and forcing the feds to cute wasteful, unnecessary spending.
