Glad they could be there to represent our Utah Team!!! William (Bill) Pressgrove Alex Merrill _____________________________________ Monthly Spotlight: Name: Joyce Berry COS Title: Associate Regional Director Passed States City raised in: Born in Huntington, W VA, grew up in Shreveport, LA. Spent much of my life in Texas raising kids – and Florida as soon as the kids were grown and starting their families. City current living in: We live in and are registered to vote in New Port Richey, FL. We also have a home in Burleson, TX a suburb of Fort Worth (we spend about 4 months of the year in TX). Favorite Hobbies: WORK, I love to work with people and COS, we also like to sail but are currently without a boat, reading, making soap, keeping up with my kids, 2 daughters, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren! What brought you to COS (Your Why): I Had the privilege of working with Tom Coburn (he was still a family practice doctor at the time) in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was an honest and inspirational person. I followed him through the years as he went to Washington. When I saw that he was involved with COS I knew I had to check it out, did so and ![]() Page 4 of 7 recognized that this was the only thing I COULD do to try to preserve our country for my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren Inspirational thought: Whether you believe you will succeed or not, you are probably right. This has brought me through many trials and helped me to keep my mind on the goals and moving ahead. More about You: My husband and I celebrated our 60 year anniversary this past summer. I was a teenage bride at the ripe age of 15. I had my oldest daughter 13 months after I got married. My second came along when I was 19. We grew up together. I was asked to leave school (which was very important to me) because I was pregnant – it just wasn’t the thing to do back then. I worked many different jobs as I raised a family, switchboard operator, information operator, repair service operator, receiving clerk for valves and materials for a nuclear plant, and other interesting roles prior to deciding that I wanted to be a nurse. I started as a Licensed Nurse in a one-year program. I continued my education getting my bachelor’s in nursing while I worked full time as a nurse in the hospital, psychiatry, Labor, and Delivery were my primary areas of focus. Once I got my degree, we headed out on our thirty- one’ sailboat for a six-month trip to the Bahamas through the intercoastal waterways from Houston, Texas. These were some of the happiest days of my life. I love the ocean and the life on a boat (we had lived on our boat for over 2 years when we left). My husband decided that he had enough peace and quiet and we came home and left the idyllic life we had shared. I immediately went to work in the hospital where I had done my training as a licensed nurse and continued to get my master’s degree. I was asked if I would be interested in moving into the Asst. Administrator role responsible for Nursing and other clinical services and I of course said yes. I worked full time, worked on my master’s in nursing full-time and was committed to creating a great workplace to be a nurse. I eventually got my master’s and am proud to say I still have Nurses from those early days who are dear friends. I went on to different roles as I love change, while I was the Chief Nursing Officer in Muskogee, I met Dr. Coburn. I started doing consulting focusing on compliance with Medicare and state regulations. I have to say although I almost always worked in termination (the hospital was threatened with losing their ability to participate in the Medicare program which is a death knell) I never lost a hospital. I eventually retired at my husband’s request to try to live the life of a Nana and stay at home wife. I have to say I did not like it, love my grandkids and girls, but I love work too. I had always maintained very close relationships with my family and didn’t think that the two were not in sync. I found COS and started handing out pocket guides in 2017 while living in Texas and traveling in our RV. While in Florida in an RV park, I recruited the gentleman who became our District Captain, he asked me if I was going to help him and of course, the answer was “YES.” I assumed the role of TelePatriot Team Leader, then a few months later added State Grassroots Coordinator to my roles. I maintain those roles today although I am training a State Grassroots Coordinator to take over most of the activity. I love the camaraderie and common mission we serve to save our country! by Joyce Berry _____________________________________ ![]() Page 5 of 7 Utah Veterans Update: Welcome to all our Veterans!
