This document declared the thirteen American colonies free from British rule, asserting their right to self-governance and liberty. The adoption of the Declaration was a pivotal moment in American history, symbolizing the colonies' desire to break away from oppressive British policies and governance. Celebrations and Traditions: Independence Day is celebrated with various festivities, including fireworks, parades, barbecues, and family gatherings. The first celebrations included public readings of the Declaration, bonfires, and military displays. Over the years, these celebrations have evolved into large- scale events, with fireworks becoming a staple of the holiday. In 1870, Congress officially recognized the 4th of July as a federal holiday, and it has since become a significant cultural event in the United States. The 4th of July serves as a reminder of the values of freedom and independence that the United States was founded upon. It is a day for Americans to reflect on their history, celebrate their national identity, and honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for the nation's independence. _____________________________________ ![]() Page 3 of 7 COS Transitioning to Zulip : COS National is transitioning from Slack to Zulip.
