===== August 2024     The “Sudden” Decay of America’s Core Values Was Predicted =====

by Myrl Nisely

The “fundamental changes in Washington, DC” as promised by our president-elect in 2008 have turned out to be a dramatic degradation of America’s core values. Open hostility to most of our foundational beliefs and way of life is now impacting us daily. It all seems so sudden and surprising. Yet, consider this insight written in 1944 by journalist and author John T. Flynn in his book titled, As We Go Marching. He foresaw the threat of fascism at the hands of our leaders that we are experiencing today:

“They are leaders who are convinced that the present economic system is washed up . . . and who wish to commit this country to the rule of the bureaucratic states; interfering in the affairs of the states and cities; taking part in the management of industry and finance and agriculture; assuming the role of great national banker and investor, borrowing billions every year and spending them on all sorts of projects through which such a government can paralyze opposition and command public support; marshalling great armies and navies at crushing costs to support the industry of war and preparation for war which will become our greatest industry; and adding to all this the most romantic adventures in global planning, regeneration, and domination, all to be done under the authority of a powerfully centralized government in which the executive will hold in effect all the powers, with Congress reduced to the role of a debating society. There is your fascist. And the sooner America realizes this dreadful fact the sooner it will arm itself to make an end of American fascism masquerading under the guise of the champion of democracy.”1

Convention of States, WE are the ones effectively working to end fascism and federal oppression. Let us carry on!

===== Patti Buxton Has Retired … With Highest Honors! =====

by Myrl Nisely, State Content Writer

Patti retired in June 2024 and will soon receive the highest honor COS bestows. If you ever have an occasion to call Patti Buxton on the phone, in the first moments of your conversation you’ll feel her energy, her sense of humor, and her zealous patriotism. How fitting she become the first recipient in 2020 of the coveted Convention of States Patriot Pin award! This distinction is offered to grassroots volunteers, like Patti, who show dedication, passion, and patriotism in the ongoing effort to pass the COS resolution in Ohio.

Patti (center) receives the first COS OH Patriot Pin Award in 2020 from Amy Frederick and Bill Scott.

Devoted to the movement since 2015, Patti most recently served as Regional Captain for Region One, having served as a District Captain prior to that. She is one of the founders, writers, and editors of Ohio’s Sounds of Freedom newsletter which has become an informative and well-read monthly publication. In addition, Patti had done exemplary work making contact and maintaining relationships with state legislators. For example, she called the offices of 44 House Republicans just to thank them for voting for Derrick Merrin in accordance with the Republican caucus. Such positive connections with legislators are key to passing the COS resolution in Ohio.

According to Assistant State Director Amy Frederick, Patti was known to volunteer for “everything.” Patti claims her mother is to blame for her passion for volunteerism. She was encouraged as a young girl by her mother to offer entire days as a babysitter for families attending a blood drive at a local church. Patti also recognizes her high level of motivation is the result of being raised in a time when civics was actually taught and retained.

With a passion for both volunteerism and patriotism coursing through her veins, Patti easily committed to COS during her later years with the Tea Party after hearing Mark Meckler discuss the movement. How fortunate for COS Ohio that such a connection was made. Patti was a key grassroots volunteer for COS Ohio ever since. Says Amy Frederick of Patti, “She has long deserved to be acknowledged for the volunteer that she is. Patti’s outstanding commitment to COS is simply unparalleled and greatly appreciated.”

Now, the distinguished Challenge Coin Award has come to Patti. In 2016, Convention of States forged 300 Challenge Coins, limited-edition medallions engraved with Founding Father George Mason’s likeness. Minted to honor those who go above and beyond the call of duty, these coins were bestowed sparingly upon only the most deserving candidates.

Challenge Coin recipients like Patti Buxton constitute an undaunted band of grassroots activists, an army with an enduring commitment to George Mason’s vision. We can only imagine the pride Mason and his fellow Founders would feel to see the words of Article V transformed into a resounding call to action championed by the remarkable men and women who carry this cause forward. However, as of Saturday, November 4, 2023, the final coin was awarded, and the original mold was destroyed. Obviously, COS activities have continued to bring to the forefront deserving volunteer patriots since then, so what to do?

Mint a Second Edition of 300 Coins! This time named for Senator Tom Coburn with his likeness.

Announcement was made to Patti on June 26 by Bill Scott, SD, Mike Farris, Founder and Catherine Zemanek RD. She is receiving #13 out of this second edition, or #313 overall. Bill and Amy will hand the coin to Patti in the near future.

Patti, we congratulate you and wish you a long and restful retirement. You have been a marvelous leader and an example the rest of us volunteers should emulate. We bid you goodbye with love.

by Bill Scott & Sue Kahler

Our Ohio legislature adjourned near the end of June for the remainder of the summer and won't return until late fall after the Nov 5th elections. Then begins the “Lame Duck” period of legislature sessions through the end of December, which marks the official end of the 2023/2024 135th General Assembly session.

Noteworthy events in June included the opposition hearing for our COS resolution HJR-3 on June 4th, a statewide Legislative Advocacy Day in the Capital on June 11th where grassroots lobbied their legislators or aides along with COS Co-founder Dr. Michael Farris joining us, and finally, on June 25th a proponent hearing was held with 3 COS leaders testifying on behalf of HB-607, the COS “Faithful Delegate” bill outlining the selection, duties, responsibilities and penalties for oath violations by any OH COS commissioners to a convention.

Click this link HJR-3 Opposition to COS Hearing to watch COS National Legislative Sr VP Rita Peters dissect a few of the many falsehoods opponents put forth at their June 4th hearing opposing HJR-3.

What can you do to help?

Please consider using these remaining summer and fall months to find creative ways to meet up with and hopefully build relationships with your OH House Representative and OH State Senator. Call their Columbus office and ask their aide where the legislator expects to be in the District over the next few weeks, and follow it up again a few weeks later for an updated appearances list.

You can also follow them on social media, especially X (twitter) and Facebook for more activity information, but that's often after the fact, so talking with the aides is best. Most of them are running for re-election, so that's their main focus from now until November, but you can still make your presence and constituency known to them! You will be hearing more from your Regional and District Captains about the benefits of legislator relationship building. You can also ask questions or advice from our OH COS statewide Legislative Liaison, Sue Kahler, at sue.kahler@cosaction.com or 614-442-9022.

The picture below shows most of the grassroots volunteers and leaders who gathered in the lower level of the Capital during our successful June 11th Advocacy Day in Columbus.

===== Editorial Changes to COS Ohio Sound of Freedom Newsletter =====

After three-and-a-half years as Editor of COS Ohio's newsletter, Tom Quarrie is stepping aside. He, with the help of Regional Captain Patti Buxton, have been the main contributors to the newsletter since its inception in February of 2021.

Says Patti of her journalistic partner, “Tom would spend weeks getting ideas together for a piece. He tried hard to make his work pertain to Convention of States and wanted to offer his readers extra inspiration.”

A true patriot and believer in Article V, Tom will remain part of the COS Ohio family of volunteers. Despite both stepping away from the monthly tasks of publishing the newsletter, we haven't heard the last from Tom who will remain one of Ohio's State Content Writers.

In Tom's stead, Myrl Nisely has taken on the role as Editor of the Sound of Freedom. In Patti Buxton's retirement, Diana Telles, State Communications Coordinator, will be lending the assist.

Myrl has been a State Content Writer for Ohio since 2023. He began writing research pieces for the Research and Writing project back in January 2023. Since that time, he has proven a prolific writer for COS Ohio providing excellent and well researched blog articles, letters to the editor, and written testimony to Ohio House committees. COS Ohio leadership is excited he has agreed to step into the position as Editor.

Another stalwart of the Sound of Freedom newsletter is Mikal Wyman, State Information Analyst (SIA). Since its inception, Mikal has been in the background these past three-and-a-half years aggregating writing pieces, positioning photos, editing, and ensuring the overall look and distribution of the newsletter. Mikal will continue with this key role in publishing the newsletter.

===== Hilliard, Ohio 2024 Independence Day Parade =====

by Ginnie Morgan

Hilliard’s July 4th Parade was a great event for Convention of States Ohio! As he does every year, HD-12 District Captain Ron Oates entered our Ohio float in this large Region 4 parade. But this year Ron pulled out all the stops and walked the parade dressed as old Benjamin Franklin himself, creating exciting COS exposure to this crowd of thousands! Pictured with Benjamin Franklin is HD-10 District Captain Mike Pyatt. Other COS parade volunteers not pictured were Gorette Oates, wife of Ben Franklin and Don Oates, Ben’s brother. Below is a picture of all four.

===== Regional Activity Reports =====

==== Region One ====

by Brenda Mitchell

Thankful for all of the mentorship and wisdom that the newly retired Patti Buxton has provided to all of Region One. We wish her well in her new endeavors!

We had our first regional meeting at the Findlay Library on July 17 with me, Brenda Mitchell, the new Regional Captain for Region One. The meeting went well and was well attended with some new information presented by Amy Frederick for using Citizen Builder.

Katherine Clark gave a COS presentation at the Webster Township meeting in Wood County and they voted to pass our non-binding resolution to support COS. Great job Katherine in your role in our Municipality Project!

COS yard signs and our new banners are being distributed.

We are running into legislators at fairs this year! Returning DC Randy Lewis has encountered into Senator Theresa Gavarone and Representative D.J. Swearingen. Brenda Mitchell has seen Representative Tracy Richardson, as well as Bernie Moreno. Looking to meet as many as we can during their recess.

==== Region Four ====

by Ed Mulholland

Since the COS Advocacy Day at the statehouse in June, Region Four has continued its efforts with legislators while also educating the public.

DC Ron Oates organized a COS float in the Hilliard Fourth of July parade. Several Region Four activists helped man a COS booth at the United Freedom Festival in Sandyville.

Coming up will be a booth at the Delaware “First Friday” event organized by Kristine Wolfe and Vickie Geraci.

==== Region Five ====

by Susan Dunn

Like every other region, we’re not letting up! Lame duck or not, there are still five months left in this General Assembly to bring HJR-3 to a vote in Columbus. Appointments with representatives and senators are our focus!

Region Five will offer grassroots support to the Municipality Project when COS presentation is given by Roger Gibb this month in Turtle Creek Twp., outside Lebanon.

We’re going to follow Massachusetts' example of “Shopping for Petition Signers” and see the impact Region Five can make with a COS table in front of busy grocery stores.

==== Region Six ====

by Steve Jones

Becky Schatzburg and her husband Louie have been holding excellent in-person meetings in Beavercreek, Ohio for several years.

Roger Gibb and Co-captain John Chambers have targeted every single municipality in Warren County for passage of our COS non-binding resolution. Five have already passed.

District Captain Mark Pagano with Co-captain Judy Lanning and DC team member Carol Howard are currently working at the COS booth at the Vinton County Fair. To date, they have seen many new petition signers and will be convert many into grassroots volunteers. They have an eye set on birthing another county team in Jackson County when the time is right!

Region Six has been working with the Region Five team to institute in-person meetings at the home of Regional Captain Susan Dunn. The goal is to have a close location for an in-person meeting every third Saturday of the month to which new petition signers and volunteers could be invited to attend.

Steve Jones is developing a guide for our time of prayer and fasting on Article V Day (September 15th). Read more about this vital event **HERE**

Support for COS in Ohio continues to grow as evidenced by the following statewide statistics. Our continuous and steady growth continues into 2023! We've got over 120,000 supporters and we're nearing 115,000 petition signers across the state!

Thanks to Leo Fohl for compiling these statistics for us.
