COS New Jersey Reaches out to College Students

Convention of States New Jersey is making headway into a promising target population.

Convention of States New Jersey is making headway into an emerging and promising target population to deliver our message of limited federal government.

On April 26, Todd Lund, Jr. (Coalitions Director Team with a focus on student affairs) provided an introduction to COS for two classes at Ocean County College in Toms River, NJ. The presentation was informational in nature and intended to educate students on the mechanics of Article V and the three areas of concern addressed in the COS resolution.

Points covered were: the current spending crisis and factors contributing to our ballooning national debt; endless federal regulations and how unelected bureaucrats operate without accountability to the voters; career politicians who are removed from the concerns of regular citizens; and what an Article V convention would look like, from calling the convention to the rules of operation.

Student questions ran the gamut: Why can’t Congress reset the national debt? What happens if state legislators try to work against the convention process? How do we get 38 states to ratify amendments coming out of the convention? Why does each state delegation get only one vote regardless of population/this is not a very democratic process (note to student – the United States is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy).

In today’s polarized political environment, and considering the ideology and world view of many in the college-age generation, naturally, some concerns arose regarding the specifics of amendments that could be proposed, sources of funding for Convention of States, and the loss of perceived “rights” currently enforced by the federal government.

These concerns illustrate the urgent need to educate students on the history of our Republic and why a bourgeoning federal government is totally antithetical to the ideals of our Founding Fathers.

Balanced and rational discourse is always productive, even if it results in some challenging conversations. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the student affairs movement spread to all 50 states, perhaps through a COS partnership with Patriot Academy graduates?

The younger generation will determine our country’s future course. Let’s pray they receive the proper message of love for, and pride in, the American freedom and opportunity upon which our country was founded!
