COS Agenda Continues in South Carolina Legislative Session
The legislative agenda of the South Carolina House Republicans proves the impact of Convention of States.
| On Thursday, January 19, the South Carolina House Republican Caucus held a meeting to outline its legislative agenda for 2023. The agenda consists of five pillars with the goal of promoting a strong, conservative agenda for South Carolina. These pillars focus on economic prosperity, education reform, limiting government, personal freedom, and law and order. Related to comments on economic development, the House Republicans have committed the House of Representatives to increasing work opportunities by creating affordable workforce housing and focusing on job retention; reducing bureaucracy in the industry by removing certain permit requirements; and improving infrastructure by investing in roads, bridges, and broadband internet. Representative Shannon Erickson, who chairs the Education and Public Works Committee, presented a plan for education reform in South Carolina. The legislature plans to increase teacher salaries, encourage parental school choice, and require transparency in school curriculums throughout the state. The Republican caucus intends to propose plans to limit government by increasing fiscal responsibility. This includes slashing taxes for families and making the practice of environmental, social, and governmental scoring illegal in South Carolina. Another part of the fiscal responsibility plan is to retain and increase the surplus that the South Carolina legislature carved out of the revenues in 2022, which was the state's largest ever. Representative Bob Cox described increasing personal freedom. This includes expanding Second Amendment rights to make South Carolina a constitutional carry state and supporting the pro-life agenda through legislation. Finally, Representatives Chris Wooten and Weston Newton discussed public safety. The House is looking to pass bills for bond reform in order to increase penalties for those who commit crimes while out on bail. They are also looking to create tax benefits for first responders as well as fully fund the police. Another important piece of the public safety agenda is increasing penalties for fentanyl crimes. The SC Convention of States team representatives were pleased when they were invited to stand with House Speaker Murell Smith for a photo op in the State House lobby. So far there are 19 states committed to the COS mission to limit government, impose fiscal responsibility, and create term limits for federal officials. The legislative agenda of the South Carolina House Republicans proves the impact of Convention of States, and these values could be spread nationwide if we reach the 34 states needed to call a convention. |
