An urgent update about FEMA
A front-row seat to government ineptitude.
| Ronald Reagan warned us about government “help.” “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help,” he said. Americans in North Carolina and Florida got a front-row seat to government ineptitude after Hurricanes Milton and Helene ravaged the Southeast last year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an organization ostensibly dedicated to serving Americans impacted by natural disasters, infamously validated Reagan’s warning by shamefully botching its response to the storms and discriminating against Donald Trump supporters who had MAGA flags in their front yards. It did not help when one week after Hurricane Helene hit, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that FEMA, which had previously provided $1 billion in services to “noncitizen migrants,” may not have enough funds to support Americans through hurricane season. It was an unmitigated disaster, one that raised many questions about the efficacy of government assistance. But as Convention of States President Mark Meckler pointed out at the time, FEMA isn’t even constitutional. FEMA, he said, “is, obviously, a disaster. It’s been a disaster for a long time. But I would argue, fundamentally, at its core, that’s because it should not exist.” The men who drafted our Constitution trusted the states to handle regional emergencies like natural disasters. Therefore, they did not empower the federal government with the authority to respond. By elevating state or regional issues to the national level, we risk making disaster relief and other areas that should be nonpartisan needlessly divisive. That’s why Convention of States and the Trump administration are pushing to bring this power back home to the states. Hurricane season is once again upon us, and President Trump is in the “process of fundamentally reforming … FEMA, or maybe getting rid of FEMA.” This means the states must step up to take greater responsibility for disaster relief. As Trump said, “I’d like to see the states take care of disasters, let the states take care of the tornadoes and the hurricanes, and I think you’re going to find it a lot less expensive. You’ll do it for less than half, and you’re going to get a lot quicker response.” Eliminating or downsizing FEMA doesn’t end disaster relief — it shifts responsibility to local and state governments, where accountability is higher and the risk of bureaucratic corruption is often lower. Unfortunately, this may be yet another worse-than-average hurricane season, which is why it’s vital to solidify these reforms as soon as possible.
