A small gun show that had big results
Small town folk are precisely the kind of people Convention of States represents.
| “Well, as a disabled veteran, I know more than most of the necessity for this thing!” said the first man I had spoken to that day. “I've been dealing with the red tape and bureaucrats longer than I care for and would like to have a say myself.” It was so invigorating to hear from an American Veteran of a foreign war who not only respected and agreed with a Convention of the states but he was also glad to see people from a younger generation voicing their opinions and acting upon them. Although the man at the booth next to us would casually voice his doubts, he also was ready to listen to us and talk about the benefits of a Convention. Also that same man had loaned us a table so we could have a banner and pamphlets laid out for the other folk that attended the gun show whom might be interested. Americans at their finest! After several hours of meeting random passersby and talking to our neighboring hosts, we became restless. Between my colleague Julie Baker and I, we had talked to almost every person there. We spoke with several former and current public servants including a sheriff, a mayor of a nearby town, and many vets, one of whom had lived all over the country and even in others while in service. His teenage daughter spoke to us of debates held regularly in her classes at her local high school. After taking one of every information pamphlet, bi-fold, and magazine, she told us of her plans to request that the next classroom debate be over the fifth article of the Constitution! This was a great experience. I believe that the untapped supporters from the true grassroots communities–such as the good people we met in Lusk, Wyoming–are the very people that Convention of States represents and is willing to stand up for. At the end of a long day filled with many deep and interesting discussions with people of several different backgrounds and varying ideas, I was all the more glad to be involved in taking part in something that was so exciting and obviously so desirable to so many Americans, young and old. We've had good luck in Wyoming so far and hope to keep that ball rolling! |
