A HOME RUN FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

HOW SWEET IT IS! ~ A Home Run for Religious Liberty.

On June 13th, 2025, the Louisiana legislature passed HB371, ensuring that churches face no stricter regulations than the least restrictive rules applied to secular businesses. The bill, sponsored by Representative Beryl Amedee, is a result of hindrance with our previous governor’s COVID-19 pandemic era policies.

Those policies kept bars and abortion clinics open but shuttered churches. Recently, our state fire marshal demanded churches spend millions on building upgrades to host Vacation Bible Schools, Mother’s Day Out, camps etc. in the same buildings that were deemed safe and within code for Sunday Services. HB371 upholds the principle that the government must have a compelling interest to burden religious exercise and ensures remedies for violations. Convention of States Action-Louisiana (COSLA)has been active in support of HB371, as the bill aligns with the National COS Freedom, Federalism, or Fundamental Rights (F3) focus.

NOTE: THE F3 campaign is COS’s first step to move our grassroots army into engaging at the local and State level by developing a strategy and using COS resources to support or oppose legislative actions that infringe on or improve upon our Freedom, Federalism, or Fundamental Rights (F3). In support of this legislation COSLA volunteers contacted their state representatives and senators, sending nearly 700 (emails and phone calls) in favor of House Bill 371. Thanks to those efforts and the efforts of other interested parties around the state, the Senate and House finalized the passage of HB 371.

After the bill was officially been sent to Governor Jeff Landry for his signature, COSLA volunteers again responded to a CALL TO ACTION (CTA) urging the Governor to sign this bill.

In our participation in CTAs for HB 371 from its introduction in the House, its progress through the legislature and  having been sent to the governor, COSLA’s TOTAL ACTIONS – emails and calls - were 667, and the total number of folks participating was 575. To me this shows the ‘power of one’ plus the ‘power of another one' plus the ‘power of another one’. . . You get the idea. And YES, YES, YES, HOW SWEET IT IS.

Governor Landry signed the bill, and it became law on June 20, 2025.

Dale Clary and the Legislative Liaison team ‘led the charge’ on this legislation. Heartfelt thanks to Representative Amedee, Dale and team, the COSLA grassroots, and other liberty- minded folks who let their voices be heard on this important issue.

Allons!
