I relearned recently in a Louisiana Online Conference Call that the United States of America is NOT a DEMOCRACY. We are a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC. A little background seems in order to set the stage.

Democracy In a pure democracy one person equals one vote, there is no constitutional document, often the majority rules and the minority have few recourses.
Constitutional Republic A form of government in which officials are elected by citizens to lead them as directed by their country’s constitution.

A country is considered a constitutional republic if:

* It has a constitution limiting the government’s power.
* Citizens choose their own heads of state and other governmental officials.
